Grub Worm vs. Drought Stress: How to Tell the Difference

Water fixes one of these problems and does nothing for the other. That’s the entire diagnosis in one sentence, and it’s the reason grub damage and drought stress get confused every single summer in Davis County. Both turn Kentucky bluegrass brown. Both show up in the hottest, driest stretch of the year. And treating the wrong one doesn’t just waste a week, it lets the actual problem keep spreading while you wait for a lawn that was never going to respond to more water.

We’ve already covered white grub identification and the basic uniform-versus-patchy rule of thumb in earlier posts. This one is about the specific tests that settle a hard case, the ones that tell you definitively which problem you’re looking at before you spend money treating the wrong thing.

The Two-Week Test That Settles It

Here’s the test that matters most. Water the lawn correctly, deep and infrequent, about an inch to an inch and a half a week split across two or three soakings, early in the morning, and give it ten to fourteen days. If the brown areas are drought stress, they’ll start pushing green from the base within that window, sometimes faster. Kentucky bluegrass goes dormant to survive heat and dry spells. It isn’t dead. It’s conserving itself, and it responds to water the way you’d expect a living plant to respond.

Grub-damaged turf does not respond, and the reason is physical, not complicated. Grass takes up essentially all of its water through its roots. Grubs feed right at the soil surface and chew those roots off. Once the roots are gone, there’s no pathway left for water to get into the plant, no matter how much or how well you apply it. You can water a grub-killed patch perfectly for a month and it will look exactly the same, because the grass sitting on top of that soil is functionally cut off from its own root system.

So the test is simple to run and hard to argue with. Water correctly for two weeks. If the rest of the lawn comes back but certain patches don’t, or if those patches keep growing while everything else greens up, that isn’t drought. We covered the basic tug test in our earlier grub identification post, and it still applies here as a quick first check, but the water-response timeline is the test that removes any doubt.

This is also why late summer is when everyone gets confused. Drought stress can show up any time it’s hot and dry, which in Davis County means basically all of June through September. Grub damage runs on a different clock, the insect’s own life cycle, and the worst of it typically shows up in August and September as the larvae grow into their bigger, hungrier stages before they burrow down for winter. Both problems peak in the same six-week window, which is exactly why they get mixed up.

Two More Signs That Confirm It

If you want more than one data point, two more signs settle it fast.

The first is something drought never does: animals digging up your lawn overnight. Skunks, raccoons, and birds hunt grubs as food, and they will tear up turf to get at them, leaving flipped sod, cone-shaped holes, or a churned, rototilled look by morning. This can show up even before grub numbers are high enough to damage the turf on their own, which makes a hungry skunk one of the more reliable early warnings you’ll get. It isn’t proof by itself, since the same animals will dig for earthworms too, but paired with brown patches it’s a strong signal to check further.

The second is texture and color, once you know what to look for. Drought-stressed grass usually takes on a dull, bluish-gray or slightly purple cast before it browns, and the blades curl inward like little straws to hold onto moisture. Footprints stay pressed into it because the grass doesn’t have the water pressure to spring back. The ground underneath is hard, and a screwdriver is a fight to push in. Grub-damaged turf feels spongy or loose underfoot, almost bouncy, because the root mat holding the soil together is gone, and the soil below is often still perfectly moist, which is itself a clue, since the browning is happening despite adequate water rather than because of a lack of it.

For a definitive answer, cut a one-foot square of sod at the edge of a damaged patch, a few inches deep, and fold it back like a lid. What you’re looking for are grub worms, technically beetle larvae rather than true worms, though that’s the name most people use. They’re white to cream colored, curled into a C-shape, with a brown head and three pairs of legs near the front. A couple here and there is normal in almost any lawn. Larger numbers, particularly if you’re also seeing animal digging or spreading dead patches, are your answer.

What to Do With What You Find

If the water test says drought, keep doing what you’re doing. Water deep and infrequent rather than daily and shallow, raise your mowing height to two and a half to three and a half inches so the grass shades its own roots, and give it time. If the dig test turns up grubs, a couple of things are worth knowing before you do anything else. First, the patches that already died won’t come back on their own, even after the grubs are gone, because the crowns and roots are destroyed. Those spots need to be reseeded or patched, not just watered and hoped over. Second, store-bought grub products do exist and can work, but the two places homeowners most often go wrong are timing it to the wrong point in the grub’s life cycle and using a product that isn’t matched to what’s actually in the lawn. A young grub is easy to kill. A grub that’s already grown large by August is a lot tougher, and killing it after the roots are already eaten doesn’t bring the grass back either. That’s really the whole argument for getting the diagnosis and the timing right before you buy anything.

Treating Grubs Without Guessing

We’ve been digging test patches on Davis County lawns since 1981, and the shovel test still beats guessing every time. Grub treatment comes down almost entirely to timing, more than to which product you use.

Preventive treatments go down before or right around egg hatch, typically mid-June through early July for most Davis County lawns, so the product is already sitting in the root zone when the young grubs start feeding. Young grubs are far easier to control than mature ones, which is the whole reason preventive timing works as well as it does. Curative treatments are for later in the season, when grubs are already active and damage is already showing, generally August into September. They work faster but don’t last as long, and they’re rescuing a situation rather than preventing it.

Either way, the product has to be watered into the soil to reach where the grubs actually feed. Skipping that step is one of the most common reasons a correctly chosen product still fails. Utah State University Extension sets treatment thresholds at roughly eight to ten grubs per square foot for masked chafers and three to five per square foot for the larger May and June beetle grubs, and we adjust from there based on how healthy and deeply rooted the rest of your lawn is. A thin, drought-stressed lawn can’t tolerate as many grubs as a thick, well-rooted one before real damage shows.
