Tree and Shrub Program

Four applications per year: deep root feeding in spring and fall, plus two insect control treatments during the growing season.

Trees and shrubs are usually the most valuable part of a Davis County landscape. A mature shade tree can take decades to replace. But Utah’s alkaline soil and dry climate create challenges that most homeowners do not see until the damage is visible. This program protects your trees and shrubs with scheduled feeding and insect prevention timed to when they need it most.

Why Utah's Soil Works Against Your Trees

Most soil in Davis County is alkaline clay. Alkaline soil locks out key nutrients, especially iron, even when those nutrients are present in the ground. Trees growing in alkaline conditions often cannot absorb enough iron, phosphorus, or potassium through surface-level root uptake alone. You may notice yellowing leaves with green veins, which is a classic sign of iron chlorosis caused by high soil pH.

Clay soil also compacts easily, which restricts root growth and limits how much water and oxygen reach the root zone. In Utah’s dry summers, compacted clay creates a cycle where trees are both nutrient-starved and moisture-stressed at the same time.

Deep root feeding bypasses both problems. Instead of spreading fertilizer on the surface and hoping it reaches the roots, we inject nutrients directly into the root zone below the surface. This gets past the alkaline barrier and into the area where roots can actually absorb them.

Is This Program Right for Your Trees?

This program covers ornamental trees and shrubs on residential properties. It is designed for long-term health, not emergency treatment.

This program is a good fit if:

  • You have mature shade trees, ornamental trees, or established shrubs you want to protect
  • Your trees show signs of stress like yellowing leaves, sparse canopy, or slow growth
  • You want to prevent insect damage before it starts
  • You have not been feeding your trees and want to start a maintenance program

If you have fruit trees, they need additional treatment beyond this program. Our Fruit Tree Spraying program includes dormant oil application and targeted insect control specific to fruit-bearing trees.

If a tree looks seriously unhealthy, with large dead branches, peeling bark, or rapid leaf drop, contact us for a free evaluation before signing up. Some tree problems require diagnosis before we can recommend the right approach.

What the Tree and Shrub Program Covers

This program includes four applications per year, spaced across the growing season. Two visits focus on feeding. Two visits focus on insect prevention.

Application 1: Spring Deep Root Feeding

Fertilizer is injected below the surface directly into the root zone. The blend includes iron, phosphorus, and potassium. In Davis County’s alkaline soil, surface-applied fertilizer often cannot reach the roots effectively. Deep root injection delivers nutrients past the alkaline barrier where they do the most good.

Spring feeding supports new growth as trees come out of dormancy. It gives trees the nutrient reserves they need to push healthy leaf development and build canopy density heading into summer.

Application 2: Early Season Insect Control

A preventative insect treatment applied during the early growing season. This targets aphids, beetles, spider mites, and other common tree pests in Davis County before populations build up.

If left untreated, these insects may not kill a tree outright. But they cause significant stress. An insect-stressed tree is less able to handle Utah’s summer heat and drought conditions. The combination of insect damage and heat stress can weaken a tree much faster than either problem alone.

Application 3: Mid-Season Insect Control

A second insect control treatment during peak growing season. Insect pressure is highest during summer, and a single spring treatment does not always last through the entire season. This follow-up visit keeps protection consistent through the period when your trees are most vulnerable.

Application 4: Fall Deep Root Feeding

A second deep root feeding to help trees build nutrient reserves heading into winter. Fall feeding supports root development during the cool-season growth period when roots are still active below the surface even though top growth has slowed.

Trees that go into winter with strong nutrient reserves come back healthier the following spring. This application is especially important for trees that showed signs of stress during summer.

Signs Your Trees May Need Help

Trees do not always show stress in obvious ways. Here are some common signs Davis County homeowners should watch for.

Yellowing leaves with green veins (iron chlorosis). This is one of the most common tree problems in Utah. Alkaline soil prevents iron absorption, causing leaves to turn yellow while the veins stay green. Deep root feeding with iron directly addresses this problem.

Sparse or thin canopy. If your tree is producing fewer leaves than it used to, or the canopy looks thin compared to previous years, nutrient deficiency or insect damage may be the cause.

Sticky residue on leaves or cars parked underneath. This is honeydew, a substance produced by aphids feeding on leaves. Heavy aphid infestations can coat surfaces below the tree and attract sooty mold, which turns leaves and surfaces black.

Curling, spotted, or dropping leaves during summer. Spider mites and other insects cause leaf damage that can look like disease. If leaves are curling, developing spots, or dropping early, insect feeding is a likely cause.

Dead branch tips or slow growth. Trees that are not getting enough nutrients grow slowly and may develop dead tips on branches. This is often visible in the upper canopy first.

If you are seeing any of these signs, contact us for a free evaluation. We can identify the cause and recommend whether this program or a different treatment is the right approach.

What to Expect Through the Year

Deep root feeding works below the surface, so the results show up gradually in overall tree health rather than as an immediate visible change.

After the spring feeding, you should see improved leaf color and density as the growing season progresses. Trees with iron chlorosis typically show greener, more uniform leaf color within a few weeks of treatment. Canopy fullness improves over the course of the season as nutrients support new growth.

Insect control works preventatively. You will not see dead insects falling from your trees. What you will notice is the absence of the damage that untreated trees develop: no honeydew coating, no curling leaves, no premature leaf drop during summer.

By the second year on this program, most trees show a noticeable difference in overall vigor compared to untreated trees. Long-term program participants often see the strongest results because nutrient reserves build over time.

Common Questions About the Tree and Shrub Program

This program covers ornamental trees and shrubs. Fruit trees need additional treatment, specifically dormant oil application in early spring before blossoms open. Our Fruit Tree Spraying program is designed for that. If you have both ornamental and fruit trees, we can set up both programs together.

Pricing is based on the number and size of trees and shrubs on your property. Contact us for a free evaluation and we will provide a quote specific to your landscape.

We recommend the full four-application program because feeding and insect prevention work together. A well-fed tree resists insect stress better, and an insect-free tree uses nutrients more efficiently. However, if you have specific needs, contact us and we can discuss options.

If your tree is currently under attack from aphids, spider mites, borers, or other insects, contact us. We can schedule an insecticide or miticide treatment to address the active problem. This is a separate service from the preventative treatments in this program.

We serve Davis County, Utah, including Bountiful, Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, Centerville, Clearfield, Syracuse, Fruit Heights, Woods Cross, West Bountiful, and North Salt Lake.
